Chalo Dilli is a 2014 Bollywood comedy drama film directed by Kiran Rao, produced by Atul Agnihotri, and starring Akshay Kumar, Deepika Padukone and Imran Khan. The film revolves around the story of four friends who decide to move from India to Dubai. Along the way, they get into various adventures which are set in different parts of India. It is co-produced by Shirish Kunder Productions and Krrish Films under the banners of Fox Star Studios & Fox Entertainments & Krrish Films Pvt Ltd respectively for an approximate budget of ₹300 million (US$4 million). The movie was released on 6 May 2014. The film received negative reviews from the critics. The movie was a box office flop. Five friends, Mayank (Akshay Kumar), Abhi (Imran Khan) and their two girls Neha (Deepika Padukone) and Sheela (Sonakshi Sinha) decide to go on a road trip on the occasion of India's 69th Independence Day from Delhi to Mumbai. Along the way, they encounter people and situations that challenge their friendship as well as their love for each other. The story climaxes with the four friends making a stop at Gandhi Mandap in Bikaner on 15 August - India's Independence Day - for one last night of celebration.
The concept of the film came when Kiran Rao was in Washington, D.C. Akshay Kumar got in touch with her and expressed his desire to work in a film produced by her. After hearing an outline of the story, Akshay agreed to be part of the project. The music for "Chalo Dilli" is composed by Ram Sampath, Amit Trivedi and Mithoon while lyrics penned by Ram Sampath, Kumaar and Kausar Munir, The soundtrack features vocals from Sunidhi Chauhan, Arijit Singh & Deepti Bhatnagar The satellite rights of the film were sold to Sony Entertainment Television for ₹15 crore. "Chalo Dilli" received mostly negative reviews from critics. Rajeev Masand gave the film 0/5 saying, "You’d be better off watching our national anthem on YouTube." Shubhra Gupta of Indian Express gave the film 1.5/5 stars wrote, ""Chalo Dilli" is badly written and even worse directed. If only it had an anti-toxin that would cure it of its bad taste. There’s nothing good enough in this film to recommend it to anyone." Mohar Basu of Koimoi gave the film 1. 5/5 stars, writing, "The film is too unrealistic to be relatable and too bland to evoke any form of reaction." The film opened with 25% occupancy on its first day. Although the film was expected to do well at the box office, the end result was a big flop as it earned only 10.59 crore in its first three days. The film had a poor fifth day as it earned only 1.3 crore nett apprx on Monday 10th May 2014 - down from sequel previous day's earning of 2.4 crore nett apprx - despite a fifth anniversary holiday on account of Maharana Pratap Jayanti.
